Courtney Humphries, PhD

I am a writer, journalist, teacher, researcher, and interdisciplinary scholar interested in the how we navigate science, nature, and society in a changing climate and an urbanizing world. Building on a career as a widely published science writer, my scholarly and public writing focuses on the intersection of people and the built environment. I have a masters degree in science writing from MIT and Iā€™m a former Knight Science Journalism Fellow at MIT. I have a PhD in environmental sciences from University of Massachusetts Boston, where I trained in transdisciplinary approaches to coastal issues through its NSF-funded Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT). I currently teach interdisciplinary courses at Boston College in environmental studies and journalism. I'm the author of Superdove: How the Pigeon Took Manhattan....And the World, a natural history of pigeons published by Smithsonian Books, which was acclaimed in the New York Times Book Review.
